Labor migration is a vital economic lifeline for Nepal, shaping the lives of countless families and communities. While it offers opportunities, it also presents challenges, especially for women migrant workers (WMWs) who face unique vulnerabilities due to societal norms, economic roles, and gender-based inequalities.
In 2001, women migrant workers who had returned to Nepal came together to advocate for the rights of migrant workers both in their home country and abroad. This collective effort led to the formation of POURAKHI Nepal, officially registered as a Non-Governmental Organization in Kathmandu District Administrative Office. POURAKHI Nepal is dedicated to empowering women migrant workers through a range of initiatives, including:
Providing information, advice, and counseling on the migration process and rights of WMWs.
Engaging in policy advocacy to ensure safe, dignified and informed labor migration.
Conducting capacity-building programs for WMWs and stakeholders involved in the migration cycle.
Offering entrepreneurial and psychosocial training to support the social and economic empowerment of WMWs.
Supporting the reintegration of returnee migrants, helping them transition successfully into their communities.
POURAKHI Nepal works to make domestic and international labor migration safe, orderly, regular, dignified and decent through active collaboration with government, non-government, private sector partners and migrant communities.

Our Strategic Priorities
Advocacy:
POURAKHI Nepal will effectively engage with global and regional policy dialogues on safe labor migration and decent work. We will continue to advocate for the ratification, domestication and localization of the international policy instruments on safe migration and decent work, together with a role to play in the monitoring of the existing national national policies, programs, and provisions and their effective implementation at all 3-tier government.
Reintegration:
POURAKHI Nepal will continue to provide emergency shelter service and empower women migrant workers both socially and economically to be assimilated and reintegrated in the society to lead a dignified life. We will continue to helping new migrants find positive pathways to integration by facilitating awareness and access to employment, volunteering, education, and other support systems.
Access to Justice for migrants:
Through access to justice-focused interventions, POURAKHI Nepal aims to facilitate and enable the exploited women migrant workers to access all of their human rights- including claiming compensation, make the wrongdoers accountable, referrals to credible legal services, and all other remedies. POURAKHI Nepal aims to fight against all challenges, barriers and restrictions faced by migrants in accessing justice, which includes social or attitudinal barriers, institutional barriers, information and knowledge barriers, lack of legal aids etc.
Accelerating Organization Development:
A stronger organization is a prerequisite to achieve its strategic objectives. POURAKHI Nepal will therefore design and implement various organization development interventions to strengthen its internal (organizational) capacities in terms of human capital, financial resources, physical infrastructure and facilities, and systematic operational policies in place.
